According to the statistics from September 2021, the total production volume of sheep (including both lamb and goats) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is estimated to be around 28,463,878 heads. Of this total, lambs account for approximately 21,724,724 heads, while goats make up about 6,739,154 heads.
Riyadh Province has the largest production volume of lamb, estimated at 3,578,835 heads, followed by the Makkah al-Mukarramah Province with a production volume of 2,955,344 heads, and then Jazan Province with approximately 2,757,727 heads.
Aseer Province is the largest administrative province in the Kingdom in terms of goat production, with an estimated 1,222,537 heads, followed by Najran Province with approximately 993,208 heads, and then the Makkah al-Mukarramah Province with around 671,357 heads of goats.
In 2019, the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture began implementing ten controls and mechanisms for importing live livestock, including lamb and goats. These included setting standard weights for each head, such as thirty-five kg for Suakin lamb, twenty kg for other sheep, and twenty kg for goats. These measurements are subject to periodic review by the ministry.
