The Manifa Field is located in a shallow marine area with depths ranging from one to fifteen m in the waters of the Arabian Gulf, north of al-Jubayl, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The Manifa Field was discovered in 1957. To avoid damaging the sensitive ecosystem, over 70 percent of the Manifa Field was converted into a terrestrial field with a design that included the creation of twenty-seven artificial islands. Each island is equivalent in size to ten football fields, and all were constructed using forty-five million m of sand extracted from the seabed. These islands served as onshore drilling sites over the offshore oil field, connected by a forty-one-km-long causeway.
