Abqaiq Governorate is a Category (B) governorate in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and home to the world's largest crude oil plant.
Abqaiq Governorate is one of the five least populated governorates in the Eastern Province. According to the 2022 Saudi Census, 64,632 people live in Abqaiq Governorate, constituting only 1.30 percent of the province's population.
Designation and location of Abqaiq Governorate
The name (Abqaiq) goes back to the existence of an area known as (Baqqa) located north of the present-day city of Abqaiq. Buqqa served as a water spring. Water sprang in the area, hence its name. The area still exists to this day, and before the discovery of oil, it was called Ba’lat Aba al-Qa’dan.
Abqaiq Governorate is located on the eastern coast of the Kingdom, seventy-five km south of Dammam, the headquarters of the province's emirate. It has ten affiliated administrative centers: al-Jaishiyah, al-Dughaimiyah, al-Rajihah, al-Fardaniyah, Khawr al-Thiyaba, Salasil, Ain Dar al-Balad, Ain Dar al-Jadida, Foodah, and Yakrib.

The airport that services the governorate is King Fahd Airport in Dammam, since it is the closest airport to the governorate. It is located 74.2 km away from the city center. It is an international airport with a capacity of about eight million passengers annually.
Highway 75 is the main land transportation route in Abqaiq Governorate, enabling access to the governorate and facilitating travel between the major cities within the Kingdom
