Abha International Airport, one of the international airports in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is located in the city of Abha, the administrative capital of Aseer Province, southwest of the Kingdom.
The Abha International Airport was established in 1977 as the international airport in Aseer Province, supported by the Bishah domestic airport. It covers an area of 3,547 m.
The airport serves domestic and international flights in the Kingdom, serving as the aerial gateway to Aseer Province – given its position as a tourist destination for visitors from inside and outside the Kingdom. Renowned as the southern airport with the most substantial air traffic, it saw a total of 35,027 arrivals and departures for both international and domestic flights, in 2019. These flights transported over 4.368 million passengers.
Expansion of Abha International Airport
To increase passenger capacity, in 2019, the Abha International Airport underwent terminal expansions as part of a series of airport development projects led by the General Authority of Civil Aviation at an overall cost of SAR14,219,556. The project involved developing terminals to equip them for handling international flights, both departures and arrivals, along with the addition of a new departure lounge spanning approximately 801 m and accommodating three hundred seats. Additionally, a new arrivals terminal, covering approximately 985 m and boasting a seating capacity of 320, was added. Consequently, in 2020, the airport transitioned from a regional to an international status.
The Abha International Airport is operated by the General Authority of Civil Aviation and can be directly accessed from within the city via King Fahd Road or King Faisal Road. The journey takes approximately thirty minutes by car.
