Al Jawf International Airport is one of the international airports in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is located in al-Jawf Province, north of the Kingdom, approximately twenty-three km from the city of Sikaka, the administrative capital of the province. The airport was established as a domestic airport in 1974, coinciding with the establishment of Hail International Airport.
Significance of al-Jawf International Airport
Al-Jawf Airport serves as the primary air gateway for al-Jawf Province, supported by a local airport situated 357 km to the north in al-Qurayyat Governorate. In terms of air traffic density, it ranks as the third airport in the northern region in terms of both flights and passengers, following Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk and Hail International Airport. In 2019, a total of 5,274 domestic and international flights arrived at and departed from the airport, transporting 594,968 passengers.
Adoption of al-Jawf Airport as an international airport
Al-Jawf Airport was adopted as an international airport in 2018. It initially served as a regional airport to develop economic activity, enhance operational efficiency for airports, facilitate transportation, and increase travel destinations for the residents of the Kingdom's provinces.
New al-Jawf airport project
The General Authority of Civil Aviation commenced the implementation of the new al-Jawf International Airport project in 2019. The airport's capacity is designed to accommodate one million passengers annually and will be constructed on a total area estimated at approximately 411,950 m². The airport includes an entirely new passenger terminal covering a total area of 23,250 m², with seven departure gates, and four passenger boarding bridges directly connected to the departure terminal. Additionally, it features thirteen check-in counters, simultaneously with three self-service check-in counters. The airport is characterized by handling two international flights and five domestic flights at the same time, accommodating six simultaneous (C) class aircraft, or two (C) class aircraft simultaneous with two (E) class aircraft.
