Elephant Mountain is one of the mountains in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It consists of an elephant-like rock mass, and is located in al-Ula Governorate, Medina Province, specifically east of the archaeological site of Hijr. Moreover, it is situated twenty km away from the governorate.
Elephant Mountain, also known as Jabal al-Fil, is a red sandstone formation that resembles an elephant with its trunk touching the ground due to erosion and weathering. It reaches a height of fifty-two m, and is surrounded by several mountains and desert sand deposits. It is also one of the geological wonders of al-Ula and a tourist attraction.
Efforts to preserve Elephant Mountain
The Royal Commission for al-Ula takes care of the mountain, with the help of a team of local and international experts, as part of its efforts to maintain the geographical, archaeological, and historical sites of al-Ula Governorate. These endeavors include building parking lots, pedestrian walkways, and private resting areas for individuals and families. The commission also established several restaurants and cafes near the mountain.
Moreover, the commission focuses on the environment by preserving the mountain's ecosystems and biodiversity, launching programs and events to raise awareness of the importance of preserving the environment, enacting laws to reduce logging and poaching, and activating community participation among individuals and sectors.
