Osteoporosis in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a disease that leads to a decrease in bone density and quality, making the bones more porous, fragile, and susceptible to fractures due to calcium loss. The most common fractures resulting from osteoporosis occur in the hip, spine, and wrist. It is a widespread disease globally and has no clear symptoms.
The prevalence of osteoporosis in Saudi Arabia
The Ministry of Health in the Kingdom estimated the prevalence of osteoporosis in the Kingdom to range between 30 to 40 percent, according to 2019 statistics, with the disease being significantly more common among women than men.
The prevalence of osteoporosis among women is attributed to a decrease in bone mass due to pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as female hormones and reaching menopause. Among every three women, one is affected by osteoporosis, while the rate among men is one in five. Studies have shown that fractures due to osteoporosis occur in 80 percent of women, compared to the incidence of fractures among men.
A study conducted by King Khalid University Hospital revealed that 58 percent of Saudi women suffer from osteoporosis before reaching menopause. Another study, conducted on 483 Saudi women, indicated that osteomalacia is a common condition among Saudi women during menopause.
Vitamin D deficiency is considered one of the main factors contributing to osteoporosis in the Kingdom. According to the Ministry of Health, the full extent of the osteoporosis issue is not entirely clear, and there is an increase in the number of affected individuals. This rise is likely attributed to lifestyle changes and dietary habits. Doctors expect the increase to continue unless serious preventive measures are taken.
Combating osteoporosis in Saudi Arabia
A team from the Ministry of Health developed a plan to combat osteoporosis for the year 2018, which included several recommendations for more effectively combating osteoporosis in the Kingdom.
The Ministry of Health advised preventive measures against osteoporosis, including daily sun exposure for at least twenty minutes, obtaining sufficient Vitamin D, avoiding strenuous physical exertion, and improving lifestyle habits. It also advised middle-aged and older individuals to follow a healthy lifestyle by avoiding smoking and alcohol.
