The most famous dish in Saudi cuisine is Kabsa, consisting mainly of cooked rice with some kind of meat, while Jareesh is the national dish of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Kabsa is very popular among Saudi families for lunch, whereas it is served on special occasions for dinner.
Throughout Saudi society, there is a particular way of presenting and eating Kabsa, as it is served on a large plate around which family members gather and is eaten by hand. Kabsa is also served to guests in the same way, and the number of plates served increases in proportion to the number of guests, such that each group of guests sits around each plate. The serving dish is garnished with raisins and nuts, and Daqoos is served with it as a side dish, which is a simple-prepared sauce that enhances the flavor of the dish.
Kabsa is considered a main meal for Saudi families. It is presented as a prime dish at some events like weddings and Eid celebrations, and some families even serve it to mourners on days of solace, especially those traveling from far away, as a form of appreciation for them.
In January 2023, the Culinary Arts Commission of the Ministry of Culture launched the initiative "National and Regional Dishes Narratives" to catalog and classify local dishes closely tied to Saudi identity across the Kingdom's Provinces. The authority recognized "Jareesh" as a national dish of the Kingdom and "Maqshush" as the national dessert of Saudi Arabia.
