His Excellency Khalid Bin Abdulaziz al-Falih (born in 1960) has been the Minister of Investment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since February 25, 2020. He held the position of Minister of Health from April 29, 2015, until May 7, 2016. He was then appointed Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (currently Ministry of Energy). He is the only one who has held the title of Minister of Energy, Industry, and Mineral Resources in the history of the Kingdom, and the first person to head the Ministry of Energy by its new name after the separation of industry and mineral resources into a separate portfolio. He continued at the helm of the ministry until September 2019, and in February of the following year, he was appointed Minister of Investment, where he became the first minister to handle the investment portfolio.
His education
Born in Riyadh, he finished undergraduate studies at Texas A&M University in the United States with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1982. He then completed postgraduate studies at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Dhahran. He was awarded his master’s in Business Administration in 1991.
His career
Al-Falih spent more than three decades in Saudi Aramco, where he occupied senior positions, including President of Petron Corporation, the joint venture between Saudi Aramco and the Philippine National Oil Co. In early 2003, he became Saudi Aramco's Vice-President for New Business Development, and in 2004, he was appointed member of the board of directors of Saudi Aramco and was the Senior Vice-President of Gas Business. From 2007 to 2008, al-Falih also oversaw all the company's core business in its various sectors such as exploration, production, refining, etc., in his capacity as Chief Business Officer, until he was appointed Chief Executive Officer on January 1, 2009. Then, a Royal Decree was issued on April 29, 2015, appointing him as Minister of Health. The decision to appoint him as Chairman of the board of directors of Saudi Aramco followed on May 1, 2015, in addition to his role as Minister of Health.
Honors received
Al-Falih was awarded the King Abdulaziz Medal of Excellent Class in 2009, and the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun, First Class in 2018. Additionally, he received an honorary doctorate from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
