Abu Arish Governorate is one of the governorates in the Jazan Province, located in the southwest of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is bordered to the south by Ahad al-Masarihah Governorate, to the north by Sabia Governorate, to the east by al-Aridhah Governorate, and to the west by the city of Jazan, the headquarters of the region's emirate. It is one of the historical cities that has been known since the eleventh century. Its population is estimated at 187,060, according to the 2022 census.
Historical sites in Abu Arish
Al-Abbasah Mosque in Abu Arish Governorate is one of the historical mosques in the Kingdom that the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project targets for the development of historical mosques. The mosque was a beacon of knowledge and a school for teaching reading, writing, and the Quran. It is situated on King Faisal Road, southeast of the Naseem neighborhood in the governorate, and is approximately thirty-five km east of the city of Jazan. It is also referred to as al-Sharif Abu Taleb Mosque. Its construction dates back to 1845.
The mosque has undergone restoration and expansion works, with the most recent restoration carried out by the locals in 2014. After its development, the mosque's area will reach approximately 435.38 m2, which can accommodate 165 worshippers.
Al-Qubab Mosque in Abu Arish
The historical al-Qubab Mosque is located on the western side of the Abu Arish Governorate and is about 35 km east of Jazan City. It was named Masjid al-Qubab (Mosque of the Domes) due to the presence of eighteen domes. It is also referred to as the Masjid al-Ain. It is the third oldest mosque with multiple domes, after the Two Holy Mosques. It was in 1832 when the inaugural prayer was conducted in the same location.
Abu Arish public market
There is a traditional market named after Abu Arish Governorate that has been in operation for over a century. It is held every Wednesday and is considered one of the most important weekly traditional markets in Jazan Province. Buyers and sellers gather there on Wednesday night to display the various popular goods, including coffee, cardamom, cinnamon, spices, ghee, honey, and aromatic plants such as Arabian jasmine, caddis, wormwood, and mugworts.
