The Jazan City for Basic and Transformation Industries is an industrial city in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, operating under the management and operation of the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. It aims to localize the heavy, mining, transformative, and petrochemical industries, as well as provide vital energy supplies, localize the shipbuilding industry, and invest in minerals, agriculture, livestock, and fisheries.

Establishment of Jazan City for Basic and Transformation Industries

The city was founded in 2006 under the rule of King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as the Jazan Economic City, with the aim of spearheading development in the Jazan region. The city’s establishment was entrusted to the General Investment Authority at the time and then to the Economic Cities Authority, which worked with the Ministry of Energy and Saudi Aramco to design the city’s blueprint and conceptualize the management and development of the city. In 2015, the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu was tasked with the city’s administration and operation and providing it with all services. In 2017, a decision was issued amending its name to Jazan City for Basic and Transformation Industries.

Location of Jazan City for Basic and Transformation Industries

The city is located on the Red Sea coast, about 75 km from the city of Jazan and about 26 km westward from Bisha Governorate, with a coastline of about 19.4 km. The city occupies a strategic location due to its proximity to global shipping lanes in the Red Sea and its vicinity to the Horn of Africa.

Area and facilities of Jazan City for Basic and Transformation Industries

The total surface area of the city is roughly thirty-nine million m2 and is located near the new international airport in Jazan and the approximately 712-km-long planned railway connecting the Jazan region with the city of Jeddah. The city is also home to an oil refinery built by Saudi Aramco and currently fosters ten diverse industries with more than SAR88 billion in aggregate investments. ​

The city’s initiatives with respect to the National Transformation Program include the development of the basic requirements for residential and industrial areas, the development and equipping of public facilities, the development and protection of the environment, and the provision of housing units.

Jazan City for Basic and Transformation Industries consists of three main areas: the mangrove area, the residential area, and the industrial area. The industrial area comprises:

Heavy industrial zone.

General industrial zone.

Seaport and logistics services for the industrial zone

Reverse osmosis plant and sewage treatment plant.

Green buffer zones extending across the industrial zone.

The city has three industrial and three commercial berths, a maximum capacity of nine hundred thousand standard containers per year, and handles 2.5 million t of cargo each year.
