Critical Care in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia refers to advanced life or organ support for critical patients. These services are provided within intensive care units in the Kingdom's hospitals.

Critical care within the healthcare ecosystem

Critical care departments provide intensive care for critical patients. They utilize all resources in favor of achieving the highest capacity for admitting patients requiring life support.

Healthcare forms an essential part of the Kingdom's plans and vision. Plans offer comprehensive and accessible healthcare to community members. They encompass health legislation, patient rights and responsibilities, and the health facilities ecosystem. The Health Law in the Kingdom aims to ensure comprehensive healthcare for all residents. The nation, represented by the Ministry of Health, seeks to establish a cohesive network of healthcare services that reaches every province of the Kingdom.

Critical care services

Emergency care centers are classified under support services providing medical care for minor illnesses and injuries within an independent medical facility. Medical service providers operating under the emergency care model provide efficient critical care services within a convenient timeframe involving minimal wait times.

The Kingdom comprises civil associations concerned with critical care medicine, including the Saudi Critical Care Society, established as a civil institution for health services.

Critical care qualification program

The Saudi Commission for Health Specialties has accredited the Critical Care Nursing Program at the Ministry of Health's hospitals. The program aims to qualify Saudi nurses to work in critical care departments by enrolling them in an intensive training program for nine months. In its first track, the program targets the newly hired who have completed the guidance and orientation program. The second track targets the Saudi nurses working in certain departments such as internal, surgery, outpatient departments, and primary healthcare centers to qualify them for the critical care departments and to achieve Saudization rates in line with the Saudi Vision 2030.

The program provides trainees with the necessary professional skills and expertise that enable them to work in critical care departments in order to ensure the provision of safe and high-quality nursing services in critical specialties such as intensive care (for adults, children, and newborns) and emergency departments as well as dialysis units, heart centers, and oncology centers.
