The capacity of the Prophet's Mosque reaches around two million worshippers. Since the establishment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Saudi government has prioritized the expansion, construction, and maintenance of the Two Holy Mosques. The care for the Prophet's Mosque is evident through its successive expansions. Founding King Abdulaziz Al Saud took great care of the Prophet's Mosque, and in 1949, he announced his intention to expand it. The expansion and construction were completed, and a celebration was held under the patronage of King Saud Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in 1955. In 1973, King Faisal Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud issued an order to expand the Prophet's Mosque. During the reign of King Khalid Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in 1977, a fire occurred in the area southwest of the mosque, resulting in the demolition of buildings in that area, which were then included in the Prophet's Mosque's courtyards. King Fahd Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud continued the efforts, focusing on the expansion and construction of the Prophet's Mosque to accommodate a larger number of worshippers and visitors. This led to what became known as the "Second Saudi Expansion" in 1984, which added 82,000 mto the ground floor. Prior to this expansion, the total area of the mosque was 16,500 m, meaning this expansion added roughly five times the area of previous expansions, bringing the total area to 98,500 m. The surrounding courtyards of the Prophet's Mosque covered an area of 235,000 m.
During the reign of King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, in 2012, the foundation stone was laid for the Third Saudi Expansion of the Two Holy Mosques, which includes three phases for the expansion of the Prophet's Mosque.
During the reign of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the care and attention given to the Two Holy Mosques continued. This included his order to complete the Third Saudi Expansion of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque.
