Al-Izam Mosque is a historical mosque situated in al-Ula Governorate in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah Province, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is located in the vicinity of Musa Bin Nusayr Castle, on the road connecting al-Ula City to al-Hijr.
Designation of al-Izam Mosque
Al-Izam Mosque was designated as such because Prophet Muhammed peace be upon him (PBUH) marked the Qibla using bones (Izam) upon reaching Wadi al-Qura (al-Ula) in 630, while he was on the way to the Battle of Tabuk since no rocks or blocks could be found. The residents of the area built a mosque thereafter and named it al-Izam Mosque.
Al-Izam Mosque is built of rocks. Its interior walls are smoothed with clay. The mosque was renovated many times, lastly in 1998, when it was renovated by a philanthropist from the city of al-Ula.
Area of al-Izam Mosque
Al-Izam Mosque, covering an area of 773.34m, is one of the mosques targeted by the second phase of Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques. Although it was not being used, the mosque will accommodate 580 worshipers. Every mosque will maintain its original architectural integrity dating back to its establishment.
