Al-Abbasah Mosque, also known as al-Sharif Abu Talib Mosque, is a historic mosque located on King Faisal Road in the southeastern part of al-Naseem Neighborhood in Abu Arish Governorate, one of the governorates of Jazan Province, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is situated thirty-five km east of the city of Jazan.
History of al-Abbasah Mosque
The historical evidence indicates that the construction of the Abbasah Mosque dates back to 1846. This date is recorded on the plaque above the mihrab. The mosque was built by Mohammed Abu Talib, and it is attributed to him. The name of al-Abbasah Mosque is derived from the Abbasid family, which took charge of leading and caring for the mosque.
Significance of al-Abbasah Mosque
Al-Abbasah Mosque had a significant social role among the residents of the area. It served as an educational beacon, particularly before the establishment of modern schools. In this mosque, children were taught reading, writing, and the Quran.
Restorations of al-Abbasah Mosque
The mosque has undergone several renovations and expansion works, most notably the two expansions in 1998 and 2003. The latest renovation of the mosque was initiated by the residents of the neighborhood in 2015.
Among the prominent imams of the mosque in the past were Ahmed Abdullah Abbas, Yahya Abdullah Abbas, Ahmed Mohammed Abbas, commonly known as Mohammed Mani, and Khaled Matri. Among the prominent muezzins was Ali al-Nahari.
Renovation of al-Abbasah Mosque
The area of al-Abbasah Mosque was 656 m, but with its inclusion in the Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques in its second phase, its area has now become approximately 435.38 m, and its capacity has reached 165 worshipers.
