The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation is a Saudi government center dedicated to providing medical and social care for organ donation and transplantation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It enjoys a legal personality and financial and administrative independence, and is structurally linked to the Saudi Health Council. Its headquarters is located in the capital, Riyadh.

Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation establishment

The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation's inception dates back to 1984, coinciding with the establishment of the National Kidney Foundation. In 1992, the Council of Ministers issued a decree to change the name of the National Kidney Foundation to the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation and expand its tasks and services.

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, inaugurated the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation’s new headquarters (when he was the governor of Riyadh) in 1997 and established an affiliated charitable dialysis center.

A reference center for the Gulf Cooperation Council states

In 2006, the GCC Health Council issued a decision to accredit the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation as a reference center for the GCC states.

The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation was associated with the Saudi Health Council (formerly known as the Health Services Council) in the Kingdom as per the decision of the Council of Ministers issued in 2008. A budget was allocated for the end-stage organ failure and organ transplantation program.

Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation tasks

The tasks of the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation include the following:

Operational Activities: Registering and following up on patients with organ failure and post-transplant patients, receiving reports of brain death cases, following them up, coordinating the organ removal process, and distributing organs to transplant centers in the Kingdom.

Regulation and Compliance: Developing policies and procedures for transplantation and organ donation activities in accordance with the Law on Human Organ Donation Law (M/70 - 2021). Additionally, developing the necessary standards and conditions for licensing organ transplant programs and regularly monitoring and evaluating facilities.

Prevention and Awareness: The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation aims to provide awareness and educational programs to prevent organ failure and to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation in the community.

Research and Education: The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation highlights scientific research related to organ transplantation and organ failure and strives to organize courses, conferences, and educational and training programs in this field locally and globally.
