King Salman Science Oasis is an educational and recreational center in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that provides basic science education to all segments of society, fosters innovation, and promotes entrepreneurship in the application of science. It was launched in 1985 through a strategic partnership between the Riyadh Foundation for Science and the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology in Riyadh.
Establishment of King Salman Science Oasis
The Science Oasis Project originated in the city of Riyadh with an idea adopted by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (the Governor of Riyadh Province at that time), following the Kingdom's participation in the Space Shuttle Discovery Mission in 1985. It was established as an educational and recreational center serving all segments of society. In 1994, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz inaugurated the interim Science Oasis in the Diplomatic Quarter.
Committees of King Salman Science Oasis
In 1997, the Oasis Committee was formed, and in 2001, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (the Governor of Riyadh Province at that time) directed the incorporation of the Oasis into the Riyadh Foundation for Science, granting it financial and administrative independence. In 2004, royal approval was issued to allocate land for the Science Oasis project within the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology in Riyadh.
In 2010, the Oasis adopted an integrated model that brings together the government, private, and third sectors in a single system for the establishment and operation of the Oasis, using mechanisms that ensure sustainability and achieve various institutional goals. The cornerstone for the project was laid in a ceremony presided over by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud when he was the Governor of Riyadh. He also agreed to serve as the honorary supreme president of the Oasis. In 2015, a contract for the exhibits was signed, and the construction of the Energy and Life Halls was completed in 2018. The first phase of the project was completed in 2022.
Objectives of King Salman Science Oasis
The Oasis aims to provide an educational and entertaining experience for visitors through a range of activities and events, e.g., visiting scientific halls. These halls showcase key areas of global leadership in which the Kingdom excels, such as energy, manufacturing industries, aerospace, water, communications, technology, and mining.
The Oasis hosts visiting exhibitions and scientific festivals, along with organizing scientific seminars, lectures, and practical workshops, either in person or virtually, through its headquarters on King Abdullah Road in Riyadh.
