King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC) is an independent government-owned Saudi foundation with a private, non-profit nature. It features three main branches in Riyadh, Jeddah and Madina, as well as offices and clinics to provide health cooperation services in several regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The center is known for its global technologies, modern medical equipment, and high-quality care services, as it is performing at a global competitive level.
The hospital was established on a land donated by King Faisal bin Abdulaziz al-Saud with an area of 450,000 m. King Faisal laid its foundation stone in 1970, and it was inaugurated by King Khalid bin Abdulaziz al-Saud in 1975.
KFSHRC is one of the most important specialized medical references in the world, and a leading center in providing medical care in the Middle East. It received twenty-nine accreditation certificates and thirteen awards.
KFSHRC's Board of Directors oversees the development of its objectives and organization structure. Moreover, the executive general supervisor is responsible for its overall performance and development of its long-term plans.
Importance of KFSHRC
KFSHRC provides medical care in all fields, and is particularly skilled in the field of organ transplantation. In 2021, it succeeded in performing 1,367 organ transplant surgeries, 286 liver transplants, 479 stem cell transplants and other organ transplants. In 2017, the center performed a total of 1,471 operations, the highest number of organ transplants in the Middle East.
The hospital is known as a medical educational institution through its thirty fellowship programs, and is supervised by the Saudi Commission for Medical Specialties. It offers seventy-one programs in specialized disciplines. In 2019, 178 doctors graduated from the fellowship program, and nine students graduated from the center's pharmacy programs. In 2021, the number of trainees reached 1,564.
KFSHRC facilities
The research center at KFSHRC encompasses more than three-hundred researches, including scientists and technicians of various disciplines who are ranked among the best scientists and practitioners in the medical domain. They use the most advanced technologies across eighteen departments and programs in different medical fields.
KFSHRC in Riyadh includes twenty-seven medical departments and 1,346 beds. In 2018, 15,542 surgeries were performed at the center, an average of 42,58 per day, except for heart surgeries. Moreover, outpatient visits amounted to 101,4317.
The hospital's branch in Jeddah had a capacity of 506 beds across sixteen departments. It witnessed the performance of 6,374 operations in 2018, except for heart surgeries, an average of 17,46 per day. The number of outpatient visits exceeded 334,950, according to the latest hospital reports in 2018.
The hospital branch in Madina has a capacity of three hundred beds. It was called Al-Miqat Hospital until it became affiliated with KFSHRC in 2018 upon orders from the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud.
KFSHRC hosts the Heart Center, the only heart transplant center in the Gulf region. It was accredited by the Joint Commission International and the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. The Heart Center employs doctors specialized in different heart areas to provide services to adults and children.
The hospital is also known for featuring the largest oncology center in the Gulf region, offering various services from intra-operative radiotherapy programs to tomotherapy, robotic radiotherapy, and others. The center was accredited by the World Health Organization as a collaborative center for cancer prevention and control.
The Genetic Medicine Program was established at KFSHRC in 2011, which is an important reference center for genetic diseases in the Kingdom, and provides diagnostic and therapeutic services through eleven clinics.
