Al-Shamsiyah Palace, also known as the Palace of Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman, is a historic palace located in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is situated on the western bank of Wadi al-Batha, near al-Murabba Neighborhood.
History of al-Shamsiyah Historical Palace
The construction of al-Shamsiyah Palace dates back to 1935 when King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud ordered its construction for Prince Saud Bin Abdulaziz Bin Saud Bin Faisal al-Kabir and his sister, Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman Bin Faisal Al Saud.
Al-Shamsiyah Palace covers an area of approximately 650 m and consists of three floors. Its construction relied on mixed mud, gypsum, and wood. The palace features an open internal courtyard surrounded by the palace's rooms. It has remained abandoned since the 1950s. The Shamsiyah Palace also contains inscriptions that reflect the local architectural style of the 1930s.
The development of al-Shamsiyah Palace
On September 11, 2019, Crown Prince and Prime Minister His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz directed the restoration of Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman’s Palace (al-Shamsiyah Palace) at his own expense.
On April 5, 2021, a scientific team from Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University documented the components of Shamsiyah Palace during their visit. They completed the architectural survey requirements for this research study, which is part of the initiative "Culture... the Fourth Function of the University" under the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cultural Heritage Program.
Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman
Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman Bin Faisal Al Saud was born in 1875 in Riyadh City. She quickly made a significant mark on Saudi history, known for her wisdom as she served as an advisor to King Abdulaziz on family matters. With her pioneering personality, she played an active role in charitable and social work. She passed away in 1950 at the age of seventy-seven.
