Tannour is a traditional oven or pot used for preparing baked goods in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Like other tools, it is associated with the lifestyles of most provinces and the varying ways of life of their inhabitants, from the mountains to the plains.
It is traditionally made from stone clay according to specific specifications and was exclusively fueled by tree trunks, palm wood, and firewood. Over time, its construction methods have evolved, and it is now also made from iron sheets and fueled by gas. Both (the stone clay tannour and the gas tannour) are circular, with a cavity about half a m in diameter and a height of one m.
Tannour is commonly used for cooking and baking, particularly for preparing Tannour bread or Mifa bread, which is one of the most iconic elements of the southern Saudi bakery.
