The Saudi Coffee Company is a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund (PIF). It supports local production of Arabica coffee and aims to highlight the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a main home of this type of coffee, which is one of the most renowned worldwide.
Establishment of the Saudi Coffee Company
The Saudi Coffee Company was established on May 15, 2022, in line with the PIF's strategy focusing on local investment in new sectors. Supporting coffee is part of the Kingdom's efforts to diversify income sources, achieve agricultural self-sufficiency, and uphold the significance of coffee in local culture. Coffee is rooted in Saudi identity, representing an ancient heritage and symbolizing Saudi generosity and hospitality in society. It is preeminent in all formal and social events, particularly Khawlani coffee, which is famously cultivated in Jazan Province, southwest of the Kingdom.
Supporting coffee cultivation in Jazan
The suitable climatic and geographical conditions of the mountain governorates in Jazan Province are conducive to coffee cultivation. Moreover, coffee cultivation and export are a cultural heritage that was carried on from one generation to another in the province. Coffee cultivation requires experience in tending and irrigation, as well as special methods for processing and preserving beans after harvest.
Coffee cultivation in Jazan Province remains widely popular and growing in production. In 2022, the total number of coffee farmers in the province reached about 1,802, in addition to around 332,857 coffee trees, of which 203,504 are fruitful.
Objectives of the Saudi Coffee Company
The Saudi Coffee Company seeks to stimulate the food and agriculture sector in the Kingdom by supporting coffee production and elevating it as a local product. The company enhances access to modern production technologies, from cultivation to harvesting, roasting, marketing, and sale, until it reaches the consumers.
The company also aims to provide support to local farmers by training them in special support programs, in cooperation with supporting entities, such as the Jazan Mountains Development Authority, whose programs have been designed to deliver support services to coffee farmers in the region.
The Saudi Coffee Company promotes partnerships with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) seeking opportunities to invest in the coffee production and sales sector. The company plans to invest SAR1.2 billion in the coffee sector and increase Saudi annual coffee production from 300 t to 2,500 t, thus transforming the Kingdom into a leading exporter of the finest coffee beans in the world.
