King Abdulaziz Palace in al-Muwayh is a historic palace located in al-Muwayh Governorate in Makkah al-Mukarramah Province in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is approximately 180 km east of Taif City. It was built in 1938 for King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud to stay in and as a station during his journeys between Riyadh and Makkah al-Mukarramah, as well as during his trips for Hajj, Umrah, or summer vacation.

The construction of King Abdulaziz Palace in al-Muwayh

The palace was constructed using black stones and in the traditional design. Its area is estimated to be 14,850 m², surrounded in all directions by a wall with a height of 4.5 m and a thickness of ninety cm. The palace's designs featured multiple forms aimed at fortification and defense, adhering to special engineering standards.

The contents of King Abdulaziz Palace in al-Muwayh

The palace contains several towers, two coffee preparation rooms, rooms for guests, guards, servants, and bathrooms. There is also a fuel station located outside the southern side of the castle, that was used to fill car fuel using a manual pump, with accommodation for the station workers nearby. It also comprises:

  • The Royal Palace: It is a rectangular building located on the western side of the fortress, with two entrances. The main entrance is on the southern side and contains architectural units consisting of nineteen benches to the left inside from the main northern door. It includes the official council "al-Mukhtasar", a dining hall, a bedroom, and a bathroom.
  • The Hospitality Palace: A rectangular building adjacent to the royal palace on the eastern side, containing a group of rooms with a view of an open courtyard. Its main entrance is from the northern side, with a width of 3.4 m.
  • The Residential Emirate Palace: A rectangular-shaped building located in the middle of the fortress on the southern side, containing six rooms, four of which are designated for sleeping, along with a living room, a kitchen, a water tank, and a bathroom.

King Abdulaziz's visit to al-Muwayh Governorate

In 1941, King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud visited al-Muwayh Governorate, approximately three years after the construction of the palace. He visited the palace, which was known as one of King Abdulaziz's main stations when he came for Hajj, Umrah, summer vacation, or hunting. He also used to meet with citizens at the palace during his annual visits.
