The Saudi National Anthem, or the Saudi Royal Salute, has been the official anthem of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since 1984. It is the royal salute performed during celebrations, official receptions, and national occasions in the Kingdom.
Composing the national anthem
The lyrics of the national anthem were written by the Saudi poet Ibrahim Khafaji, by the order of King Khalid Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and suggested by Prince Abdullah al-Faisal Bin Abdulaziz. Upon the passing of King Khalid, King Fahd Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud ordered the completion of the writing of the national anthem. Khafaji finished it in 1984. The Saudi musician Siraj Umar was then tasked with creating the musical arrangement and melody for the anthem.
Lyrics of the national anthem
The lyrics of the national anthem were written based on the principles upon which the Kingdom was founded, its objectives, and its future aspirations. The lyrics reflect these values and are as follows:
Hasten to glory and supremacy, Glorify the Creator of the heavens
And raise the green flag, Carrying the written light reflecting guidance
Repeat: Allahu Akbar, O my homeland.
My homeland, Live as the pride of Muslims! Long live the King, For the flag and the homeland!
Tuning of the national anthem
Contrary to the usual practice of deriving the melody from the poetry, the lyrics of the national anthem were composed to fit the already adopted tune of the royal salute, and not the other way around. Friday, June 29, 1984, was the official birthdate of the Saudi national anthem. On that day, it was broadcast on Saudi radio and television stations as the opening to their daily programs.
Performance of the national anthem
Standing during the national anthem by citizens, residents, and guests on different occasions is a form of national respect and appreciation. In the educational context, students perform the Saudi national anthem daily during the morning assembly while in school.
