The Academy of Arabic Poetry is a cultural institution affiliated with Taif University. It is located in Taif Governorate, Makkah al-Mukarramah Province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The academy specializes in serving Arabic poetry and poets by supporting the study of this field, developing the capabilities of poetic and critical talents, organizing events and activities, holding specialized forums, conferences, and lectures, and issuing annual reports on the state of Arabic poetry.
The academy is headquartered in the courtyard of the historic King Saud Palace at Taif University. It comprises halls designed to accommodate poetry and criticism seminars, lectures, evening events, and specialized workshops. Additionally, it houses an audiovisual library featuring Arabic poetic works.
Goals of the Academy of Arabic Poetry
The Academy of Arabic Poetry seeks to nurture the innovative poetic talents of individuals, elevate the role of poetry in modern culture, document forms of innovative Arab poetic expression, assess poetic trends, and promote their advancement. Moreover, the academy endeavors to encourage and motivate poets to refine and grow, as well as utilize social media platforms to foster the dissemination of poetic culture
Units of the Academy of Arabic Poetry
The Academy of Arabic Poetry includes three units, each of which plays a role in organizing and managing its activities. They are:
The training and consulting unit is dedicated to proposing training programs and workshops hosted by the academy, then implementing them, and selecting personnel to lead them. It collaborates with other departments to focus on talented groups and offer linguistic reviews, consultations, research, and reports.
The research and publishing unit issues periodic reports on the state of poetry and criticism in the Arab world, as well as any reports or research proposed by the Board of Trustees. Moreover, this unit assumes its role as a publishing entity and provides relevant studies and research. It also supervises publications approved by the academy.
The activities and talent care unit supports organizing activities, seminars, and events, from their initial proposal to completion. It also nurtures talented individuals by attracting and supporting them cognitively and following up on the status of the programs proposed for them. Moreover, this unit endeavors to establish connections between poetic works and other arts, such as visual art and poetic theatre, and attracts poets from inside and outside the Kingdom to share their experiences and encourage emerging talents.
Programs of the Academy of Arabic Poetry
The first session of the Prince Abdullah al-Faisal Award for Arabic Poetry was launched on November 11, 2018, as the first program launched by the Academy of Arabic Poetry. This international award supports poetry and poets by competing for awards across six tracks: the Prince Abdullah al-Faisal Poetry Experience Award, Prince Abdullah al-Faisal Award for Theatrical Poetry, Prince Abdullah al-Faisal Award for the Best Project in Arabic Poetry, Prince Abdullah al-Faisal Award for the Sung Poem, and Prince Abdullah al-Faisal Award for Promising Poet.
