The Pigeon Berry (Duranta erecta, Verbenaceae) is a shrubby plant belonging to the verbena family Verbenaceae. It has opposite, serrated, glossy, and evergreen leaves. Its native habitat is the tropical regions of the Americas, extending northward to the arid areas of California. It is cultivated in Riyadh Province in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and is commonly used as a hedge, in public gardens, around homes, and in pedestrian areas. Due to its diverse forms and flower colors, it is also known by other names, including golden dewdrop.

Growth of the pigeon berry

The pigeon berry is a relatively fast-growing plant, reaching heights of 1.5 to six m, with a spread of two to five m. Its leaves are opposite, serrated, glossy, and evergreen, growing on slender branches that sometimes bear a few thorns.

The plant produces flowers resembling lily or lavender blooms with white edges, arranged in hanging clusters that attract butterflies. These flowers later give way to pea-sized orange fruits that emit a fragrant vanilla-like scent. The plant has multiple color varieties, including the 'Aurea' variety, also known as golden dewdrop, which features yellow foliage suitable for ornamental use.

Cultivation of the pigeon berry

The pigeon berry requires well-draining soil when planted but does not need extensive care. It can tolerate growth in moderately fertile soil and thrives in both full sunlight and partial shade. The plant can withstand light frost down to minus six degrees Celsius but is susceptible to wind damage.

Uses of the pigeon berry

The pigeon berry propagates through seeds, cuttings, and transplanting seedlings. If left unshaped, it requires minimal maintenance, though occasional pruning may be necessary. When pruned as a hedge, gaps should be left to allow light to reach the lower branches, ensuring they retain their green color.

It is cultivated for use in open public spaces, pedestrian areas, and park afforestation. Additionally, it is planted as a flowering or tall hedge.
