Al-Dhahirah Neighborhood is one of the old neighborhoods of Riyadh City in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was named 'al-Dhahirah' due to its location on an elevated rocky surface. It is bordered to the north by the town wall, to the east by Hillat al-Ajnab, to the west by Al Suwailem Street, and was home to several families of Al Saud.

Landmarks of al-Dhahirah Neighborhood

The neighborhood features three mosques, the largest of which is the Grand Mosque (currently known as Imam Turki Bin Abdullah Grand Mosque). It is also home to al-Masmak Fortress, one of Riyadh City’s prominent architectural landmarks. Additionally, the neighborhood contains historic wells, including Fidda Well, Sa'di Well, Faislah Well, Ahmadah Well, and Ubaydah Well, along with several walls and gateways. An old cemetery where Imam Turki Bin Abdullah, the founder of the Second Saudi State, was buried, is also located in the neighborhood, along with Ibn Mudaymigh School.

Significance of al-Dhahirah Neighborhood

Al-Dhahirah Neighborhood dates back to the twentieth century and represents the geographical heart and central district of Riyadh City, specifically north of al-Hukm Palace District. It covers an area of 750,000 m² and is surrounded by major roads: King Fahd Road to the west, Imam Faisal Bin Turki Street—also known as 'al-Khazan' Street— to the north, Imam Turki Bin Abdullah Street to the south, and King Faisal Street to the east. Its southern part includes al-Hukm Palace and several government entities such as Riyadh Province Emirate, Riyadh Province Municipality, Riyadh Police Department, the Grand Court, and Salam Park. The neighborhood extends northward to King Abdulaziz Historical Center and southward to Riyadh’s old city gate.

Development of al-Dhahirah Neighborhood

In 2013, the Riyadh Development Authority (now the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC)) implemented a development project in al-Dhahirah Neighborhood. The project aimed to create new tourist destinations in central Riyadh, recognizing its significance as a political, economic, social, and historical center, while also expanding efforts to preserve historic neighborhoods.
