Al-Qal'ah Historic Mosque is one of the mosques targeted in the second phase of the Mohammed Bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques. It is located in Al-Henakiyah Governorate, approximately 102 km northeast of al-Madinah al-Munawwarah Province.

Historical significance

Al-Qal'ah Historic Mosque holds significance due to its location in the heart of Al-Qal'ah Historic Neighborhood in Al-Henakiyah Town, adjacent to the main road connecting Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah to Al-Henakiyah Governorate. Archaeological evidence indicates that the mosque was built during the first two decades of the twentieth century. It was originally known as Hamad Bin Samihah Mosque, named after the town’s governor.

The town's residents worked together to construct and maintain the mosque during that period. Among its imams was Sheikh Mohammed Rashad Al-Harbi, and among its muezzins was Khalil Al-Turki. The mosque is currently inactive, and prayers are not held there.

Mosque area

The area of Al-Qal'ah Historic Mosque was estimated at 181.75 m² before restoration and 263.55 m² after development, with a capacity of 171 worshippers.

The Mohammed Bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques contributes to showcasing the cultural dimension of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It implements four strategic objectives, summarized by restoring ‏historical mosques‏ for worship and prayer, reviving the architectural authenticity of historical mosques, highlighting Saudi Arabia’s civilizational dimension, and strengthening the religious and cultural status of historical mosques.
