Al-Nusb Mosque is a heritage mosque built in the Sarat architectural style in Abha City at the beginning of the eighteenth century. It is one of the oldest mosques in Aseer Province. Prayers had ceased to be held in the mosque for a period before being resumed in 1999.
History of al-Nusb Mosque
The construction of al-Nusb Mosque, located in al-Nusb Neighborhood in central Abha City, Aseer Province, dates back to 1690. Mohammed Al Mufreh I built it, and his family members have cared for it since its establishment to the present day. A new mosque was later built adjacent to the old one, which was subsequently incorporated into the original structure. Prayers are currently held in the mosque.
The mosque is situated in the historic al-Nusb Neighborhood, which is characterized by its ancient buildings, several heritage palaces, and pathways designed in the "Raqf" style. The mosque has retained its original condition to this day.
Elements of al-Nusb Mosque
The elements of al-Nusb Mosque include the old prayer hall, which is the most prominent heritage feature, built in the Sarat style using mud and stone and roofed with juniper wood trunks. Additionally, the modern prayer hall, constructed with bricks and concrete, is located on the southern side of the heritage mosque. Other facilities include restrooms, ablution areas, a guard's room, and a storage room.
The modern prayer hall is located south of the heritage mosque and was built using concrete blocks. It features an uncovered courtyard and has a square-shaped minaret. The mosque covers an area of approximately 281 m² and can accommodate around eighty-seven worshippers.
Development of al-Nusb Mosque
Al-Nusb Mosque was included in the first phase of the project to restore and rehabilitate historical mosques across various regions of the Kingdom, as part of the Mohammed Bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques, which began in 2018. The mosque's area increased to 286 m², allowing it to accommodate up to 117 worshippers. The development work included restoring the heritage prayer hall, restrooms, ablution areas, and the mosque courtyard.
