Basil (Ocimum basilicum, Lamiaceae) is a perennial herbaceous perennial plant of the Lamiaceae species. It is endemic to the Middle East, southeastern Europe, and southwestern Asia. It is one of the plant varieties used for landscaping in Riyadh and other regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Characteristics of basil

The height of basil ranges between thirty and sixty cm. It has a width of about forty cm. It features mostly bright green, rounded, and aromatic leaves with a pleasant odor.

Basil blooms in summer, where it features panicles bearing single white flowers that are about 0.5-0.8 cm long. Basil boasts a ravishing variety known for its reddish-purple leaves and a light purple variety known as "Ocimum Basilicum."

Cultivation of basil

Basil grows from seeds. It is resistant to drought and urban environments, but sensitive to dusty environments. It can grow for a long time in areas with mild winters and in sunny areas with low humidity. However, its growth requires moist, slightly saline soil.

Under ideal circumstances, basil does not require intensive care. In fact, the level of care depends on the cultivation site. However, regular pruning is a key catalyst for dense basil cultivation.

Uses of basil

Basil is an herbaceous plant that grows spontaneously in shrubberies. It is easily propagated by seed. Hence, basil can be planted on sidewalks and in public places. It is also a valuable ornamental plant whenever planted densely or within groups. Moreover, it can form a low hedge or be cultivated as a vegetative cover under trees.
