Turtles live in the Farasan Islands Reserve in Jazan Province, located in the southwestern part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They also inhabit the coasts of Umluj in Tabuk Province, including al-Waqadi Island, Hassan Mountain Island, and Ras al-Shabaan, as well as Burqan Mountain Island in the northwestern part of Saudi Arabia. Additionally, turtles can be found in Ras Baridi Region, north of Yanbu City in the Red Sea along Saudi Arabia’s western coast, and in the coral islands of the Arabian Gulf, particularly Karan and Jana Islands, which belong to the Eastern Province.
Sea turtles are a rich component of biodiversity and serve as crucial indicators of the ecosystem health. They spend their entire lives in the waters of seas and oceans, with female turtles only coming ashore to lay eggs during the nesting season. There are seven species of turtles belonging to four families. In Saudi arabia’s territorial waters, five species of sea turtles have been recorded: The green turtle, the hawksbill turtle, the loggerhead turtle, the olive ridley turtle, and the leatherback turtle.
Turtles are classified as endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature "IUCN" and are listed on its endangered species list. Measures to protect them include avoiding tampering with their nests or eggs, refraining from harming them or exposing them to strong light, especially during nesting seasons, as well as maintaining clean beaches and avoiding littering.
