Trigonella (Trigonella hamosa L) is a wild herbaceous plant of the Fabaceae (Leguminosae) species. It is one of the plants that grows after winter rains in most regions of Saudi Arabia. It is found in several locations in the Eastern Province and Aseer Province once soil becomes saturated in response to heavy rainfall.

Characteristic of trigonella

Trigonella grows up to seventy cm tall. It bears abundant branches at its base and triple leaves petioles. It features small clustered yellow flowers and bears small pod-shaped fruits. It produces small yellow seeds.

Uses of trigonella

Trigonella boasts a therapeutic and nutritional value. Its fresh leaves can be eaten while its seed oil is therapeutic. In fact, it contains alkaloids (trigonelline and linolein). Its seeds are useful in treating asthma, whooping cough, and removing skin stains. Its seeds also contain diosgenin which is isolated from the seeds to prepare cortisone and its derivatives, used to treat chest diseases and rheumatism.
