Al-Fatah Private School is one of the earliest private community schools in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was established in Makkah al-Mukarramah, west of Saudi Arabia, by several local residents. The school later became a formal institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Knowledge (now the Ministry of Education).
Establishment phase of al-Fatah Private School
The establishment of al-Fatah Private School in Makkah al-Mukarramah is attributed to Muhammad Hussein Abdulghani Felemban, a resident of Makkah al-Mukarramah who worked as a teacher at the Grand Mosque. Al-Fatah School is considered an extension of the idea behind Dar Al-Uloom religious schools, which were dedicated to teaching Indonesian expatriates, but within the framework of private education. That was when the teachers of these schools recognized the need for girls' education, making it necessary to establish a branch for girls. The first private school for girls was established in 1943 in al-Shamiyah area of Makkah Al-Mukarramah. However, this school did not remain in the area for long before it was relocated to another neighborhood, highlighting the need for another school to cover the education of girls in al-Shamiyah and al-Falaq neighborhoods of Makkah al-Mukarramah.
Thus, al-Fatah Private School was established in Makkah al-Mukarramah at the beginning of 1948 in al-Shamiyah neighborhood, at Dar Hassan Sultan building. It was initially named al-Fatah School for Hygiene and Industry.
Education at al-Fatah Private School
The school adopted the formal public education system in 1958. Its name was then changed to al-Fatah Private School. It was the second private school established during the reign of the Founding King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud and one of the schools that continued to operate to the present day.
The school offered curricula in religious sciences, Arabic studies, as well as industrial and mathematical sciences.
Founder of al-Fatah Private School
The establishment of al-Fatah Private School is attributed to Sheikh Muhammad Hussein Bin Abdulghani Felemban, a prominent figure in Makkah community and a teacher at the Grand Mosque. He remained closely associated with the Grand Mosque until 1948, when he was appointed as a teacher at Dar al-Uloom Religious Schools. He later assumed supervision of al-Fatah Private School, appointing his wife, who held a teaching certificate from a teachers’ institute in Indonesia, as the school’s principal and teacher. The school welcomed female students with tuition fees not exceeding a few riyals.
