The Climate Change Regional Center is an environmental initiative launched during the first edition of the Middle East Green Initiative Summit in 2021. It aims to preserve and sustain the local and regional environment according to the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. The center was inaugurated by the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture in cooperation with King Abdullah University for Science and Technology "KAUST" on March 5, 2023. The center develops and enhances modern tools and information, assisting in reducing the negative impacts of climate change by providing necessary information.

At the regional and international levels, the center works to encourage plans and programs through experts and researchers in the field of climate change, collaborating and participating to build human capacities capable of understanding the current climate, predicting its future changes, and participating in developing climate information.

Objectives of the Climate Change Regional Center

The Climate Change Regional Center aims to study the impact of weather through afforestation, within the Saudi Green Initiatives, by collecting and sharing climate science research, studying renewable energy resources, measuring their effects on carbon emissions, and engaging the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the national, regional, and global levels by developing and enhancing climate information to provide plans.

Contributions of the Climate Change Regional Center

The impacts of the Climate Change Regional Center are evident in the Kingdom’s society, environment, and economy. Socially, the center enhances community awareness about climate change effects and mitigates risks from its current impacts. Environmentally, it supports the Kingdom’s environmental performance to curb the intensification of climate change phenomena, while identifying environmental and natural resources to adapt to these changes. Economically, it minimizes the repercussions of climate change on economic and developmental sectors, encourages industries to lower carbon emissions, and promotes the localization of environmentally friendly industries.

The center attracted sixteen scientists from sixteen countries to conduct climate projections and extensive research. The center seeks to share the research with the Research Department at the World Meteorological Organization.
