The largest archaeological site of the Hellenistic era in the eastern Arabian Peninsula is Thaj historical city, with an area of around eight hundred thousand m. It is one of the cities of the historical Kingdom of Gerrha, which emerged in the third century BCE in the northeast of the Arabian Peninsula. Some historical studies indicate that it was a settlement that witnessed multiple layers of human habitation.

Thaj archaeological site is located ninety km west of al-Jubayl City, Eastern Province, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is home to the remains of a large ancient city. The Saudi-French delegation began excavations within the site in 2016. Works revealed that Thaj was a main urban center of the last centuries BCE and the first centuries CE. They also revealed that Thaj is the only site that is considered a city on the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula and that it is one of the pre-Islamic Arabian kingdoms.
