Badr Historical Route is a tourist journey project focused on the sites of Islamic history in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah Province in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It aims to document landmarks of the Prophet’s Sirah (biography) and highlight the historical significance of the region. The project was launched by al-Madinah al-Munawwarah Region Development Authority in March 2024 as part of its efforts, in collaboration with relevant entities, to prepare and activate around one hundred sites associated with the Prophet’s biography and Islamic history in the region.

Objectives of Badr Historical Route Project

Badr Historical Route Project aims to activate historical sites and create a walking path along the Prophet’s route to historic Badr, catering to long-distance hiking enthusiasts. It seeks to establish a sustainable tourism product, document and preserve landmarks of the Prophet’s biography, enrich the experience of visitors to al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, achieve economic development impact for residents of the governorates and villages, and revive their cultural heritage.

Badr Historical Route journeys

The first journeys of Badr Historical Route began from King Abdulaziz Square in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, leading to the historic Badr area. The route includes approximately forty historical sites and landmarks related to the story of Badr Site and its stone landmarks, as well as around twenty-five villages and residential clusters along the 175 km path.

The first journey of Badr Historical Route took approximately four days, combining walking and camel riding. It included twenty-seven participants from the Kingdom, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Malaysia, Indonesia, and several Arab countries. The journey's stops were as follows: on the first day, it stopped at Wadi Malal; on the second day, participants camped near Bir al-Rawha; on the third day, the journey stopped at Khayf al-Hizami in Wadi al-Safra; and on the fourth day, it stopped at Wadi Dhafran before reaching the historic Badr area by the end of the day.

Badr Historical Route Design Competition

In October 2023, al-Madinah al-Munawwarah Region Development Authority launched a specialized competition to design and develop "Badr Historical Route." The competition aimed to revive Badr Historical Route by applying principles of creative thinking and urban planning, enabling visitors to explore the sites and enriching their experience in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah by achieving the province's strategic objectives. The competition defined five main pillars: integrating historical values into the project's overall design, providing an exceptional visitor experience by enhancing the human and cultural dimensions, highlighting the site's significance in Islamic history, fostering community culture and knowledge-sharing, and activating historical sites to enrich the experience of pilgrims visiting al-Madinah al-Munawwarah.
