Saudi Green Initiative Day is an annual official day dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of environmental action in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It corresponds to March 27 each year and was approved by the Council of Ministers on March 19, 2024.
The Saudi Green Initiative Day coincides with March 27, 2021, the launch of the initiative, with the aim of encouraging citizens and residents in the Kingdom to contribute to building a more sustainable future for all.
Saudi Green Initiative Day 2024
The first edition of Saudi Green Initiative Day in 2024 carried the slogan "For Our Today and Their Tomorrow: KSA Together for a Greener Future." The event aimed to build a sustainable legacy for future generations, promote environmental sustainability, and raise awareness about the impact of approximately eighty initiatives implemented by the public and private sectors under the Saudi Green Initiative. These initiatives represent investments of around SAR705 billion in the green economy.
The initiatives have contributed to improving the quality of life and creating economic opportunities in emerging sectors in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. They aim to restore natural ecosystems, protect biodiversity, and sustain livelihoods by mitigating dust and sandstorms and increasing rainfall rates. These efforts support combating desertification and controlling sand encroachment.
Contributions of the Saudi Green Initiative
Since its launch on March 27, 2021, and up to March 27, 2024, the Saudi Green Initiative has contributed to connecting renewable energy projects with a capacity of 2.8 GW to the National Electric Company, which is sufficient to supply approximately 520,000 homes with electricity. These efforts are part of achieving the goal of reducing carbon emissions by around 278 million t annually by 2030, planting approximately forty-nine million trees, and rehabilitating 94,000 ha of degraded land to achieve the goal of planting ten billion trees in the coming decades.
The initiative has helped increase the proportion of protected terrestrial areas to 18.1 percent and marine protected areas to 6.49 percent of the Kingdom’s total area. It has also supported the relocalization of approximately 1,660 endangered animals into their natural habitats to protect 30 percent of the Kingdom’s terrestrial and marine areas by 2030.
