Saudi Society of Medical Genetics

The Saudi Society of Medical Genetics is the first Saudi society to specialize in the field of medical genetics in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was established on February 17, 2008, under the umbrella of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties. Headquartered in the capital, Riyadh, it contributes to the development and coordination of medical practices in the field of genetics, enrichment of scientific research, and communication for awareness, professional, and community-related purposes.

The Saudi Society of Medical Genetics aims to advance scientific thinking, develop the professional performance of its members, and enhance the scientific and professional advancements in the fields of medical genetics. It also seeks to exchange scientific products amongst scientific and professional institutions and bodies in the Kingdom and abroad, foster community awareness in terms of health genetics, enhance performance in the fields of medical genetics by offering the necessary advice and studies, and set the relevant standards for practices related to medical genetics.

The Saudi Society of Medical Genetics is engaged in many activities, including issuing a periodic scientific newsletter on medical genetics and holding study sessions, conferences, and seminars in the field of medical genetics. In this respect, on September 18, 2022, the society held the Saudi Genomics Symposium: Basics and Practices, which was attended by many medical geneticists, researchers, specialists, and technicians of molecular genetic laboratories and chemical chromosome laboratories. The symposium shed light on the Saudi Genome Program and the importance of establishing a genetic database for the Saudi society.

In 2022, the society concluded a memorandum of understanding with King Abdulaziz University to foster the contribution of the society to medical genetics programs in collaboration with the medical, health, and academic entities.

The society also encourages conducting scientific research in the fields of medical genetics. It publishes awareness-raising newsletters and publications in the society's fields of specialization for the community, attracts scientists and intellectuals concerned with its activities, contributes to the training and continuing learning programs in its areas of specialization, and offers advice to health entities in terms of the health practices, activities, and procedures.

The Saudi Commission for Health Specialties oversees the work of the Saudi Society of Medical Genetics. This supervision aims to enhance the professional practice standards, support scientific publications in the society's fields of specialization, foster the scientific and professional performance of the society's members and medical genetics practitioners, and raise the community's health awareness by producing positive impact through establishing scientific, professional, and investment-related partnerships locally, regionally, and internationally.
