Sagai Dates

Sagai Dates are among the local varieties of dates. They are grown in al-Aarid neighborhood surrounding Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They ripen in the middle of the agricultural season and are mostly expensive. They can be eaten fresh or dried.

Sagai Dates are rectangular and oval. They are thick with a yellowish tip that is inverted outward. They feature flat reddish edges. In general, the fruit is light yellow. However, when it grows into dates, the color turns golden brown.

Sagai Dates are monosaccharide dates because most of their sugar content is in the form of monosaccharides consisting of glucose and fructose. They are nutritionally rich, as each one hundred g of Sagai Dates contains forty-three mg of magnesium, thirty-six mg of calcium, and 330 calories.

Sagai Dates are one of the most notable date varieties in the Kingdom. They are subject to the standard specifications for date quality in the Kingdom, set by the Kingdom's Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture for facilitating local and international trade, fostering high-quality production, enhancing economic revenues for producers and exporters, and protecting the interests of consumers.

Sagai Dates are subject to inspection to verify their compliance with the date agricultural quality standards along with sixteen other varieties of dates in the Kingdom. These standards apply to producers, traders, exporters, and importers.

Sagai Dates categories are divided into three main categories: Superior, First, and Second. For the Superior category, the minimum weight of each date is estimated at fourteen g, where five hundred g would include thirty-five dates. Under the First category, the minimum weight of a date is no less than ten g, where five hundred g would include no more than fifty dates. The Second category is the minimum standard for Sagai Dates, where the weight of one date is no less than seven g, and five hundred g would include seventy-one dates.
