The Saudi Biological Society is among the first scientific societies established in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was founded in 1975 and is headquartered at King Saud University in Riyadh. It seeks to contribute to fostering scientific research in biology for its members, introduce this field internationally, and publish relevant outcomes under the supervision of King Saud University.
Objectives of the Saudi Biological Society
The Saudi Biological Society aims to raise scientific awareness in biological fields, foster cooperation among scientists in the Kingdom and abroad, shed light on scientific research activities in Saudi scientific institutions, and offer scientific consultancy. It seeks to raise awareness about the preservation of the natural environment in the Kingdom and hold scientific seminars and conferences entailing the attendance of specialists from around the globe, where these events would explore suitable solutions for local environmental issues. The society directs its work toward documenting relations among parties interested in biology in the Kingdom, granting membership to eligible individuals, and organizing trips and social activities for them in the Kingdom and abroad.
Membership of the Saudi Biological Society
Membership of the Saudi Biological Society is granted by the board of directors of the society. It encompasses three categories:
- Honorary membership: granted pursuant to the resolution of the general assembly of shareholders in favor of contributors to the development of the fields of biology or providers of material or in-kind services.
- Active membership: granted in favor of holders of an academic degree in one of the fields of biology.
- Affiliate membership: granted in favor of university students in the field of biology and those interested in biology who do not hold an academic qualification to become eligible for an active membership.
Achievements of the Saudi Biological Society
The society holds an annual gathering for its members. Its discussion path is selected among vital and technical questions explored worldwide, namely those related to the environment and wildlife of the Kingdom.
The society also holds workshops and training sessions. It issues the Saudi Journal of Biological Sciences, classified under International Scientific Indexing. It is published in eight English issues and one Arabic issue each year. The society has also published several translated and written books on the environment, wildlife, and microbiology, as well as patents and scientific papers.
Pursuant to the criteria for evaluating the efficiency of the performance of scientific societies for the 2020–2021 academic year, the Saudi Biological Society was granted the King Saud University Award for Scientific Excellence.
