The Outcrops of the Tuwaiq Mountains are a series of mountain peaks representing the southern edges of the Tuwaiq Mountain Range, located west of Riyadh Province. They are bordered by the dunes of al-Rub' al-Khali (Empty Quarter).
The Tuwaiq Mountain Range
Tuwaiq Mountain is a mountain range that forms a narrow escarpment to the east of the Sarawat Mountains. It is located west of Riyadh Province in the center of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Known as Tuwaiq Mountains, al-Arid Mountains, or Arid al-Yamama, it is one of the most important geographical and tourist attractions in the Kingdom.
Tuwaiq Mountains rise six hundred m above the surrounding plains and stretch over a distance of 1,200 km. They cross al-Nufud al-Thuwairat Desert in Qassim Province, pass through the boundaries of Wadi al-Dawasir in Riyadh Province, and reach the outskirts of the al-Rub' al-Khali (Empty Quarter) in the southern part of the Kingdom.
Tuwaiq Mountains are composed of limestone rocks formed during the Jurassic period, featuring sedimentary edges and coral heads. They point to a history dating back five hundred million years when the area was covered by water.
Location of the outcrops of the Tuwaiq Mountains
The outcrops of the Tuwaiq Mountains are located on the southwestern edges of al-Rub' al-Khali (Empty Quarter). They are separated from the main Tuwaiq Mountain Range due to encroaching sands, with only parts of their peaks visible.
Elevations of the outcrops of the Tuwaiq Mountains
Key outcrops of the Tuwaiq Mountains include Bani Khatmah Outcrop, approximately 1,126 m high, located northwest of al-Mankhili Center and separated from the Tuwaiq Mountain Range by al-Mandafan sand dunes. Other outcrops are Ujaihamin Outcrop, about 952 m high; al-Mutabatihat Outcrop, around 937 m high; and Huwaymil Outcrop, the southernmost outcrop of the range, standing at approximately 868 m.
