Guava Shrubs (Psidium guajava) are evergreen shrubs with prominent leaves facing each other on the branches. Upon blooming in the spring, it turns into a cultivated plant. It can be planted in Riyadh City, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Guavas are typical Myrtoideae originating in South America. They have spread to all warm regions of the world and are cultivated in the Mediterranean and semi-tropical areas. It thrives in high humidity conditions, with low maintenance care. Guavas are deemed perennial plants. They are grown through grafting, pruning, seeding, and seedling transplantation.

Guava shrubs are sensitive when cultivated in rural and drought-prone areas or upon experiencing abundant watering in low-salinity lands with a salinity rate estimated at one thousand parts per million. They can withstand a temperature of zero degrees Celsius.

Environmental conditions for the guava shrub

Guava fruits bloom under adequate environmental conditions. The newly formed leaves of the shrub turn red to protect the fruits against harsh sunlight. Upon falling, leaves turn a light gray. Flowers and fruit simultaneously bloom on the shrub's branches.

The diameter of a guava flower ranges between two and three cm. The shrub offers fruits of various sizes, forms, colors, and tastes. Their diameter ranges between five and ten cm. The shrub produces round or oblong gray, white, or fairly pink fruits. Their taste can be sweet or savory.

Guava fruits are ripe in autumn and at the beginning of winter, when they unleash a sweet aroma. They are eaten fresh or as squeezed juice or jam. The fruit pulp usually holds countless seeds, although some varieties are seedless.

Guava shrub growth

Guava shrubs grow up to a height of four to seven m. Its branches extend across three to six m. Seeds germinate easily. This contributes to the natural growth of shrubs in adequate conditions, namely in warm and humid areas. These plants grow well in areas with full sunlight in the absence of reflected heat and strong winds.

Young guava shrubs are not cold-tolerant. However, adult shrubs can survive some light cold for a short period. Guava can be planted in most types of acidic or alkaline soil that is well-drained. However, guava cultivation is preferably done in highly organic soil.
