It was established by a decision of the Council of Ministers on February 28, 2011. Its headquarters is located in Riyadh city, and it operates under the supervision of the General Court of Audit. The institute is affiliated with the International Institute of Internal Auditors and serves as the sole professional reference for internal auditing in the Kingdom.

Additionally, it provides the Internal Audit Leadership Program, which is a professional initiative aimed at supporting members and professionals in the field of internal auditing. Professional certifications provided by the Saudi Institute of Internal Auditors
The institute offers certified certifications issued by the International Institute of Internal Auditors, classified into basic, skills, and specialized certifications. These certificates target both beginner and experienced internal auditors who aspire to obtain leadership certification in internal auditing. The Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) certification is the only internationally recognized certification for internal auditors. Additionally, there are certifications for Internal Audit Practitioners and Qualifications in Internal Audit Leadership certification.
The skills certifications are specialized to advance in the field of work and include Certification in Control Self-Assessment (CCSA), Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA), Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA), and Certified Process Safety Auditor (CPSA).

Membership of the Saudi Institute of Internal Auditors
Membership in the institute is available to any natural person who applies for it. The bylaws specify the types of membership, which include individual professional membership, corporate membership, and student membership. All of these types allow for membership in the International Institute of Internal Auditors.
