Al-Hawza Mosque is one of the targeted mosques in Prince Mohammed Bin Salman's project for the Development of Historical Mosques in its second phase. It is located in the middle of al-Hawza heritage district in Dhahran al-Janub Governorate, one of the governorates of Aseer Province. Al-Hawza district is approximately twenty km away from the Saudi border with Yemen. Prayers have been held in the mosque since its construction up to the present time.
History of al-Hawza Mosque
Al-Hawza Mosque is one of the important heritage mosques in Aseer Province. It is narrated that the first construction of the mosque was undertaken by the companion Ali Ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, when the Prophet Muhammed peace be upon him (PBUH) sent him to invite the people of Yemen to embrace Islam.
Renovations of al-Hawza Mosque
Al-Hawza Mosque underwent several renovations and expansions. One of these was carried out by the villagers in 1798. Another took place during the reign of the Founding King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud, which included the construction of several rooms adjacent to the mosque for visitors from outside the province.
Area of al-Hawza Mosque
With the inclusion of al-Hawza Mosque in Prince Mohammed Bin Salman's project to Develop Historical Mosques, its capacity increased from one hundred worshippers to 148 worshipers. However, its area remained at 293 m before and after the renovation.
