The Emirate of Makkah al-Mukarramah Province is one of the emirates of the thirteen provinces of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, organizationally affiliated with the Ministry of Interior. It was established after the unification of the Kingdom and has been headed by eleven governors until 2024.

The Location of Emirate of Makkah al-Mukarramah Province

The headquarters of the emirate is located in the city of Makkah al-Mukarramah, on Prince Majid Bin Abdulaziz Road in the al-Maabdah Neighborhood. It has a branch in Jeddah Province, situated on al-Madinah al-Munawwarah Road, approximately nineteen km away from King Abdulaziz International Airport. The emirate adopts the visual identity of the Ministry of Interior as its logo.

Governorates affiliated with the Emirate of Makkah al-Mukarramah Province

The emirate of the province oversees sixteen governorates. According to the Law of Provinces issued in 1992, amended by a Royal Decree in 1994, each emirate consists of several governorates, divided into two categories: (A) and (B), in addition to several centers. This division took into consideration the residential, geographical, and security conditions, transportation routes, environmental conditions, and the historical status of each governorate.
The category (A) governorates of Makkah province include Jeddah, Taif, al-Qunfudhah, al-Lith, and Rabigh. Category (B) includes eleven governorates: al-Jumum, Khulays, al-Khurmah, Turubah, Ranyah, al-Kamil, Adham, Bahrah, Maysan, al-Aradiyat, and al-Muwayh. Altogether, they comprise approximately 128 centers.

Emirate of Makkah al-Mukarramah Province tasks

The primary tasks of the Emirate of Makkah al-Mukarramah Province encompass coordinating and collaborating with government entities during planning stages to ensure all services are provided to both citizens and residents. This comes in addition to receiving their complaints, looking into their concerns, striving to meet their demands, and resolving their issues. The emirate also focuses on maintaining security, overseeing the delivery of justice within the province, ensuring the efficacy and efficiency of services provided to the province's inhabitants, and working to enhance and develop services. Prince Khalid al-Faisal has been the incumbent Governor of the Province since 2015. Additionally, Prince Badr Bin Sultan Bin Abdulaziz has held the position of Deputy Governor of the Makkah al-Mukarramah Province since 2018.

The population of Makkah al-Mukarramah Province

The population of the Makkah al-Mukarramah Province is approximately 8,021,463 people, which is equivalent to 24.9 percent of the population of the Kingdom according to the 2022 census results. The province is the second most populous in the Kingdom after Riyadh Province, with approximately 22.1 percent of the total Saudi population residing in it. The area of the Makkah al-Mukarramah Province is approximately 137,000 km, which represents 7 percent of the total area of the Kingdom. It is considered the fourth-largest province of the Kingdom in terms of land area, following the Eastern Province, Riyadh, and al-Madinah al-Munawwarah.
