Why Was Purple Color Selected for the Royal Ceremonial Carpets in Saudi Arabia
In 2021, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia adopted the purple color for the ceremonial carpets used in official guest receptions in a joint initiative between the Ministry of Culture and the Royal Protocol. The color was inspired by the colors of lavender, basil, and Teucrium oliverianum flowers that cover the Saudi deserts in spring. It symbolizes the hospitality and generosity for which the Saudi people are known and expresses the growth that the Kingdom aims to achieve through Saudi Vision 2030.
Moreover, the edges of the carpets were adorned with embroidery along both sides using al-Sadu weaving technique, one of the national cultural elements and traditional arts and crafts of the Kingdom based on weaving skills. This highlights and honors Saudi tangible and intangible cultural elements as a hallmark of the society. In recognition of this rich cultural heritage, numerous initiatives have been launched to preserve it, raise public awareness, and foster a sense of belonging.
