The Tapline is an oil pipeline that runs through the northern parts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, connecting the oil fields in the east of the Kingdom to the Mediterranean coast. It was inaugurated in 1950 and operated for about forty years before ceasing operations in 1990. It was the world's largest oil pipeline at the time, measuring 1,648 km in length. It was used to transport oil from Buqayq in the Arabian Gulf to the port of Sidon on the Mediterranean Sea in Lebanon. The Tapline was owned by the Saudi Arabian Oil Company, "Saudi Aramco". It was built to transport oil to European markets via the Mediterranean. The construction of the pipeline took approximately three years, beginning in 1947, with a cost of USD230 million. The project involved sixteen thousand engineers and workers.
The Tapline was registered as the first industrial heritage site in the Kingdom in 2020, as a testament to the industrial and economic development that the Kingdom has experienced.
