In 2024, the Culinary Arts Commission under the Ministry of Culture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia identified regional dishes as part of the "National and Regional Dishes Narratives" initiative launched by the commission in 2023. Jareesh was chosen as the national dish of the Kingdom, being a staple in Saudi society and referred to as the "Master of Dishes," while Maqshush was selected as the national dessert of the Kingdom.
The specific dish for each province was chosen based on several criteria, including cultural and heritage value, historical significance of the dish, representation of the province's geography, its food culture, and the dish's contribution to supporting the local economy.
The regional dishes are:
Marqooq: Riyadh Province.
Saleeg: Makkah al-Mukarramah Province.
Madini Rice: al-Madinah al-Munawwarah Province.
Mlaihiyya: Northern Borders Province.
Bakeelah: al-Jawf Province.
Muqanah Bread: al-Bahah Province.
Kubaibat Hail: Hail Province.
Ar-Ruqsh: Najran Province.
Hasawi Rice: Eastern Province.
Maghsh: Jazan Province.
Sayadiyah: Tabuk Province.
Haneeth: Aseer Province.
