The Year of Arabic Calligraphy is an initiative launched by the Ministry of Culture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia throughout 2020 and extended for an additional year until 2021. With its own dedicated visual identity, the initiative aims to celebrate Arabic calligraphy due to its significance and close connection with the Arabic language. Moreover, the details, history, forms, and arts of Arabic calligraphy reflect the richness and creativity of the Arabic language, and it is a symbol of Saudi identity.
The Kingdom acted as the sponsor and incubator for the Year of Arabic Calligraphy. Arabic calligraphy was showcased as an art in itself. Its utilization culture was disseminated among beginners, and those gifted with the art of Arabic Calligraphy were supported. The initiative was supported by the Quality of Life Program, one of Saudi Vision 2030 realization programs, with the participation of governmental and private entities. Throughout the initiative, al-Khattat (Calligrapher) electronic platform was launched, which specializes in teaching Arabic calligraphy and its arts.
