The Saudi flag is deeply rooted in the history of the Saudi state since its founding in the eighteenth century. It has undergone several stages through official institutions as follows:
1727
The banner of the First Saudi State, since the time of Imam Mohammed Bin Saud, was green, made from silk and wool, with the phrase "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah" written on it.
1824
The Second Saudi State continued to use the same banner.
1902
Two crossed swords were added to the flag.
1937
On March 11, 1937, King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman Al Saud approved the Kingdom's flag in its current form, symbolizing unity, justice, strength, growth, and prosperity.
1937
The Shura Council issued a decision to designate specific flags for the King, the Crown Prince, the army, and internal aviation, as well as an internal flag, a royal Saudi naval flag, and a commercial naval flag.
1938
A Royal Decree was issued approving the law for hoisting and using flags.
1952
The Shura Council issued a decision regarding the dimensions of the flags and their modifications.
1973
A Royal Decree was issued approving the Law of the Flag of the Kingdom. Article One of the law stipulates that the national flag be rectangular, with its width two-thirds of its length. Article Two states that the King shall have a special flag identical to the national flag in its descriptions, embroidered in its lower corner adjacent to the flagpole with the state's emblem, which consists of two crossed swords topped by a palm tree, embroidered with golden silk threads.
1978
The regulatory bylaws for the Law of the Flag of the Kingdom were issued by a decision of the Council of Ministers. The bylaws consist of seven articles.
1982
The implementation of the Implementing Regulations began based on a decision by the Ministry of Interior. These regulations cover the following topics: specifications of the national flag and the royal flag, the playing of the flag anthem, flag dimensions, and general provisions.
1992
On 1 March 1992, the Basic Law of Governance in the Kingdom was issued. Article Three of the law stipulates that the state flag shall be green, with a width two-thirds of its length, featuring the phrase "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah" in the center, with a drawn sword beneath it. The flag should never be lowered at half-mast.
