Jabal Thawr Cultural District is a cultural and tourist project in Makkah al-Mukarramah City that narrates the story of the Cave of Jabal Thawr, which holds significant importance in the early history of Islam and the Prophet's migration from Makkah al-Mukarramah to al-Madinah al-Munawwarah. The district leverages the significance of this event to enrich the visitor experience in the region.

Jabal Thawr Cultural District, a tourist destination

Through the Jabal Thawr Cultural District project, the Cave and Jabal Thawr in Makkah al-Mukarramah are being transformed into a cultural project and tourist destination to enrich the religious and cultural experience of visitors to historical sites and pilgrims.

Location of Jabal Thawr

Jabal Thawr is located southeast of Makkah al-Mukarramah and south of the Grand Mosque, approximately four km away. The Cave of Thawr is a hollow rock at the top of the mountain (just below its peak), with two openings: one to the east and one to the west. It is the cave through which the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him (PBUH), and his companion Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) entered. The mountain rises 760 m above sea level and is characterized by ease at its base and ruggedness at its summit, with difficult paths. Al-Hijrah neighborhood is located nearby.

Components of the Jabal Thawr Cultural District Project

The Jabal Thawr Cultural District Project, supervised by the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, is located in an area exceeding 127,000 m. It includes various cultural and tourist components, such as a visitor reception center and the Hijrah Exhibition, which narrates the story of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), migration using museum displays, and modern technology.

Significance of the Cave of Thawr

The Cave of Thawr holds historical significance due to its connection to an important event in the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is the place where he sought refuge during the prophet's migration. In the Cave of Thawr, the Prophet (PBUH) and his companion Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stayed for three nights. The Quran references the Cave of Thawr in verse forty of Surah at-Tawbah: "If you do not aid the Prophet - Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us." And Allah sent down his tranquillity upon him and supported him with angels you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah - that is the highest. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise."
